Overview of the Ghana Stock Exchange
The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) is the principal stock exchange of Ghana. The exchange was incorporated in July 1989 with trading commencing in 1990. It currently lists 42 equities (from 37 companies) and 2 corporate bonds.

Before I list the companies on the Ghana Stock Exchange, let’s have a look at the Listing Rules and Obligations.
Listing Rules & Obligations
In order to qualify for listing on the Ghana Stock Exchange, a company must fulfill specific requirements outlined in the GSE Rule Book. The Exchange offers two equity lists, namely the Main Market and the Ghana Alternative Market (GAX), to make it feasible for several companies to list.
Companies that opt for a Main Market listing, or aspire to do so, must comply with more rigorous requirements, whereas those aiming for a GAX listing follow requirements tailored for small and medium-sized enterprises. The Listing Rules outline the essential information that must be included in the original listing application.
To ensure that the application meets the requirements, it is advised to work with a Licensed Dealing Member. The Licensed Dealing Member can provide guidance to ensure that the application contains the necessary information in areas such as:
- Background of the company – (history, type of business)
- Capitalization and share distribution – (authorized and issued capital, distribution of shareholding, etc)
- Directors and key management staff
- Long-term and funded debt – financing arrangement, interest rates, maturity dates, etc.)
- Investments and properties;
- Competition and industry;
- Profit and loss record for three years or one year as the case may be;
- Dividend records;
- Other information – (fiscal year-end, date of the annual meeting, pending legal actions, etc.) and;
- A copy of the prospectus submitted to the SEC.
